Glossary of library terms - pages

Autocat

A quick and easy way to get your existing collection and new acquisitions onto the library management system (LMS). Simply scan the book ISBN and it will automatically retrieve the title, author, cover, and other Metadata. This saves time and reduces the amount of cataloguing and typing you need to do.

Barcode

Each item in a library is assigned a unique barcode, which is used for tracking its borrowing and returning. A barcode scanner translates this information into the Library Management System (LMS), automating the loans, returns, and reservation processes.

Cataloguing

This is the process of creating detailed records for each item in your library’s collection within the LMS. Cataloguing includes Metadata like the title, author, subject, and location of each item, making it easier for users to find what they need.

Classification system

A classification system is a method of organising library materials by subject, making it easier for users to locate books and resources on specific topics.

Digital literacy

Digital literacy is a person’s ability to find, evaluate, and communicate information and it is a critical life skill in this digital age. Anyone with responsibility for the library must ensure that digital literacy is highlighted in the school environment.

Library Management System (LMS)

A Library Management System is software that helps in managing, tracking, and organising library resources. Using an OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue), it streamlines processes like Cataloguing, borrowing, and returning books, making the library more efficient and user-friendly.

Metadata

Metadata refers to the information that describes and provides context for library items. This includes details such as the author, publication date, and subject headings, all of which are vital for organising and searching your library’s collection.

OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue)

An OPAC is a simple user-friendly interface that allows library patrons to search the library catalogue online. It’s an essential feature of any library system, enabling learners and educators to discover and reserve books from any location, whether on school grounds or at home.

Third-Party Integrations

Your LMS can be integrated with other software solutions, such as school Management Information Systems (MIS), to automatically sync user data, reducing manual input and errors. Examples include Wonde and Accelerated Reader.

Weeding

Weeding is the process of removing outdated or seldom-used items from the library’s collection. Regular weeding ensures that your library remains current and relevant to its users.
