Why the Latest Update to the Simple Little Library System Matters More Than Ever
A new chapter in school library management systems is here, and it’s built around what librarians told us they need.
In the world of school and community libraries, the right library management system isn’t just a nice-to-have – it’s essential to the smooth running of your service. Whether you’re running a large secondary school library, a small rural community hub, or looking after 4 primary schools’ collections, you need a system that works with you, not against you.
That’s exactly what we’ve focused on in Version 2.4 of the Simple Little Library System (SLLS), released in October 2025. This isn’t just another software update. It’s the product of listening, learning, and reimagining what library management systems for schools and small libraries should be.
- You want simplicity.
- You want flexibility.
- You want to be able to express your library’s unique personality.
- And you want your software to help, not hinder, your everyday tasks.
Custom themes and widgets: Make it your library system
We heard you say that your library system should reflect your library. With the new Themes and Styling Options, you can now fully customise both the Admin and OPAC interfaces to match your school’s colours, celebrate events like World Book Day, Green Libraries Week, or even let students design the look as a reading competition prize. Whether you prefer a minimalist design or bold, saturated colours (as many of you told us you do!), the choice is yours.
- Choose from pre-made or build-your-own themes
- Add logos, gradients, colour buttons, and background images
- Modify text size, colour, and layout to improve accessibility
- Custom OPAC Gadgets for images, videos, hyperlinks and text
Data that works for you
Version 2.4 introduces major improvements to the Loan Report Generator, now with interactive views you can filter and sort as you need. It’s ideal for identifying which books are flying off the shelves and which might need a little promotional push.
You’ll also find a new Reservations Report, offering a clear picture of which titles are in demand – and how many requests have been fulfilled. It’s a brilliant way to demonstrate your library’s value in budget setting, reporting to senior leaders or PTAs.
Small library system details that make a big difference
Not every improvement shouts for attention, but they’re often the ones that make your daily work smoother, faster, and more intuitive. Version 2.4 of SLLS includes several thoughtful additions that respond directly to what librarians told us they need.
Let’s start with a deceptively simple but powerful upgrade: customisable book and spine labels.
You can control what information appears on your physical book labels, and in what order. Whether you’re cataloguing fiction, class texts, or legal and special collections, you’re no longer tied to default fields. Just drag and drop to add, remove, or rearrange fields – quickly and easily.
You might:
- Display Accelerated Reader levels for younger readers
- Highlight genre or reading age for special collections
- Exclude classmark for smaller or informal setups
This flexibility ensures that your printed labels reflect the realities of your library, not someone else’s idea of best practice. It’s all about enabling physical resources to be just as clear, personalised, and helpful as your digital catalogue.
Another area we’ve updated is Dark Mode. It’s a real boost for eye comfort during long cataloguing sessions or for those who work in dimmer environments (common in older buildings or small corner spaces). It also improves accessibility for users with visual sensitivities, making it easier for them to engage with your OPAC or admin dashboard.
And then there’s the new Series Authority Lists, which help you (and your readers) find every title in a series, in order – without the guesswork. Whether it’s the “Minecraft Novels”, “Diaries of a Wimpy Kid” or a non-fiction series, this small but mighty improvement helps create a smoother reading experience and saves time answering the age-old question: “What comes next?”
Get creative with your books of the week!
Why this matters: Choosing a school library management system that works for you
We know that many of you are working without formal librarianship training, with limited budgets and even more limited time. You’re making magic happen in your libraries every day – and your software should feel like a teammate, not a taskmaster.
That’s the ethos behind SLLS Version 2.4. It’s not about bells and whistles for their own sake. It’s about making library management easier, more joyful, and more effective, whether you’re:
- A solo librarian trying to do it all
- A teacher librarian supporting the library service
- A volunteer-run community library needing tools that make sense without a manual
We believe small libraries deserve smart library systems, and we’ll keep building one that earns its place in your toolkit.
