International Literacy Day at 60: What Does It Mean to Be Literate in 2026?

2026 has already given us plenty of reasons to talk about literacy. The National Year of Reading put reading firmly on the agenda; for World Book Day we looked beyond the annual celebration to the reading culture that surrounds it; and National Writing Day gave us an opportunity to think about libraries as places where children create as well as consume. 

These are all important literacy milestones for school libraries. But as International Literacy Day marks its 60th anniversary, perhaps this is the moment to expand the conversation. Its 2026 theme, Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity, places literacy within something much bigger than the ability to decode text. 

Because children are not only reading books, articles and information written for them. They are searching, scrolling and asking questions in digital environments where information may be selected, recommended, summarised or generated before they have made choices of their own. 

So what does it mean to be literate in 2026?

When the Good Enough AInswer Comes First

Google describes AI Overviews as a way of providing an AI-generated response while also offering links through which users can explore further. There is some value in this. A summary might provide a quick introduction to an unfamiliar subject, explain terminology, or even point towards useful sources. 

The problem comes when the starting point is mistaken for the destination. 

Imagine a pupil researching a homework question. They search, an answer appears at the top of the page, and it sounds convincing. Do they take time to follow the links? Read the original material? Look for another perspective? Ask who produced the information or whether the summary accurately represents it? 

Perhaps some of them do. But educators, librarians, and other responsible people are concerned for a number of reasons. Firstly, we don’t know if that summary is accurate; and secondly, summaries remove critical thinking from the research journey. 

When a summary provides a “good enough” answer, there are fewer reasons to visit the websites that produced the information in the first place. Recent research and commentary have raised concerns about the consequences for the wider information ecosystem as original publishers lose traffic while AI-generated material proliferates. 

Following a source, then, isn’t simply about catching an AI making a mistake. It helps children understand that information comes from somewhere – and that original reporting, research, expertise and creative work still matter. 

Digital Fluency Can Begin Long Before Information Literacy Does

We sometimes talk about children as digital natives, as though familiarity with technology equates with understanding. It doesn’t. 

A toddler can learn how to swipe, tap, select a video or make something happen on a screen. That does not mean they understand why something appeared, who put it there, why the next thing was recommended or what the technology wants them to do next. 

Research into children’s ability to distinguish AI-generated from human-created content makes that distinction particularly important. In one recent study, children were generally unable to identify AI-generated content reliably. More frequent technology use was also associated with poorer discernment accuracy – a useful reminder that spending more time with technology does not automatically make somebody more critically literate in its use. 

Digital literacy therefore shouldn’t be something we introduce years after children begin interacting digitally. The questions can become more sophisticated as children grow, but the principle can begin remarkably early. 

Learning how to use technology is one thing; we need to help them understand what technology is doing around them. And that matters for the adults supporting them too. Parents, carers and educators cannot help children navigate digital information confidently if they have never had opportunities to examine these systems themselves. 

Not Every Encounter With An Algorithm Is Sinister

Recommendations can be enormously useful. They can introduce us to an excellent article, an unfamiliar author, a piece of research or an idea we might never have discovered independently.

For instance, this useful article on how AI is eating itself appeared on my Facebook feed as I was writing. But there is an important difference between finding information and having information continually chosen for you. 

That distinction gives us another set of literacy questions: 

  • Why am I seeing this?  
  • Who created it?  
  • Why might it have been recommended to me?  
  • Is it informing, entertaining or persuading me – or simply trying to keep my attention?  
  • Am I seeing independent sources, or the same claim repeated in different places?  
  • Where could I go to investigate it for myself?  

Children don’t need to be taught to fear algorithms. They do need to understand that “recommended for you” does not mean “reliable for you”. 

The Lesson Is Not About How to Spot AI-Generated Content

Technology changes too quickly for a checklist of today’s warning signs to remain useful for very long. Nor do we want children to emerge believing that information is a binary either “AI” or “trustworthy”. 

Take an ordinary research question and allow pupils to encounter the information environment as it actually exists. Let them see the AI summary. Look at the search results. Follow the source. Compare it with another. Ask what each is claiming, what evidence supports it, and whether the original material says quite what the summary suggested. 

Do the same with something that arrives through a feed. Before asking whether it is true, ask a more fundamental question: 

How did this information reach you? 

That opens the door to conversations about recommendation, authorship, evidence, purpose, repetition and reliability without requiring children to become suspicious of everything they see. It also moves digital literacy beyond operating devices. 

Finding An Answer Is Only Part Of The Answer!

International Literacy Day is still, rightly, about reading and writing. Around the world, access to literacy continues to shape people’s opportunities to learn, work, participate and make themselves heard. 

But sixty years on, the environments in which we use those abilities have changed. 

For today’s children, literacy increasingly means being able to read an answer and then decide whether to accept it, question it or go further. It means recognising when information has been chosen for them, tracing claims back to their sources and retaining enough curiosity to look beyond the first plausible response. 

Technology is a useful tool, but the aim is for children to retain agency over it and decide what they want to see. 

How do we help them remain curious enough to keep looking when an answer – or an entire stream of answers – has already been chosen for them?
