Siskinds has committed to offering our lawyers and other legal staff the best-in-class digital resources. As such, we have subscriptions and materials from a variety of vendors. I found that users were having difficulty locating these materials or having trouble differentiating between what text provides what information. Our massive list of links was no longer cutting it; it was too overwhelming to be of any use. We decided to invest in an OPAC that can provide direct links to each of these digital resources.
Siskinds chose Simple Little Library System because lawyers can search our catalogue, just like they would a university library or the Law Society of Ontario’s catalogue and be provided with direct access to the book. No more searching through one vendor’s library of material, only to realize it was with the other vendor!
I built a plain-language subject heading schema stemming from the KF Modified classification system we use in Canada for legal texts. This has allowed our users to easily access a host of materials on a single subject using the “browse by subject” function within the catalogue. Another advantage is the ability to create custom locations. For the few physical materials we have, it is advantageous to be able to specify who “owns” that material or where it “lives” in our office. This allows for greater sharing of resources across the firm. These configuration features are easy to use and straight forward. This allows for incredible localization and tailoring the software specifically to our needs.
When Bailey Solutions added in SSO integration, that further raised the value of the product. It is simple for our lawyers to log-in, access materials, and bookmark their most used resources. We were also able to custom curate the “recently added” materials into a “essential titles” list instead. This provides an easy access point to frequently referenced materials, such as Watson and McGowan’s Ontario Civil Practice, a book used in every practice department in our firm.
Any time I have had questions regarding how to better tailor the program to our needs, the support team is prompt and provides straightforward answers. The online help centre of FAQs and how-to’s are in-depth and incredibly useful. I will always recommend SLLS as a cost-effective and adaptable solution for managing electronic resources to my colleagues.
